Senior Lecturer in Rural Studies, Centre for Rural Economy, Newcastle University

Dr Menelaos Gkartzios is a Senior Lecturer in Rural Studies, based at Newcastle University’s Centre for Rural Economy. His research has focused on the theory and practice of rural development, social change in rural areas and rural governance. He has led or participated in research projects funded by the Irish Research Council, the UK Arts & Humanities Research Council, the British Council, the European Regional Development Fund and the Greek Latsis Foundation.

He currently sits on the steering committee of the University’s Institute for Creative Arts Practice; chairs the ‘Rural Studies and Resource Economics’ research group; manages an MSc degree at Newcastle University, sits on the editorial board of the academic journal Sociologia Ruralis; and, has coordinated a series of rural art residencies in collaboration with Berwick Visual Arts.
